About Us

HTX LIT is a literary magazine displaying the best work of the students in the HCC-Katy Creative Writing class of the spring semester of 2020. Our purpose is to inspire wannabe writers and to give inspiration to those who already write. This is a safe space for all genres of writing with a focus on creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. We promote individuality among each piece of writing. HTX LIT has a goal of displaying work from writers of all ages, nationalities, and genders and to give a platform to a multitude of people. Founded and brought to life by a group of hard-working creative writing students, HTX LIT published its first issue on May 15, 2020. We hope the magazine will continue publishing the creative work of future students.

Meet The Writers

Bettye Anita Davis is a native of Third Ward, Texas who possesses an exuberant and magnetic personality.  Oh yes, she likes herself!  Bettye retired from the airline industry and still felt the need to accept a new challenge by enrolling in a community college course.   Why?   Because she was not going to rely on jigsaw puzzles, adult coloring books, tai chi, or gin rummy to maintain mental clarity.   Some of her special hobbies relate to aesthetic pleasures such as growing bromeliads and herbs which are used for her cooking concoctions.  Most of all, her passion for protecting animals consumes her free time. Currently, she fosters a tribe of four cats and one nursing cat with five kittens all of which may be adopted without any fees.

Abigail Jones is from the Houston area but wishes to see the world. This is her second semester at HCC and her first time in college. She dropped out of high school when she was seventeen which she finds as a blessing because it's when she found her love for writing. One of her favorite books is Vampire Academy by Rachel Mead whom she admires and wishes she could write like. When she's not writing , which is almost never, she tries to go for a four mile walk every day while listening to her iPod. As much as she enjoys writing, she doesn't want to be a writer, at least not right now. She isn't sure what she wants but is just taking it one day at a time.

Amanda Lara writes and edits with her two fur companions in Houston, Texas . She is currently working on her Associates degree in English and hopes to graduate by December 2020. Some of her work appears in the inaugural issue of HTX LIT Magazine. Amanda hopes to get more of her written pieces out to the public.

Sierra Reicks is a Psychology Major at Houston Community College. She has plans to finish her Associates degree at Houston Community College and transfer to University of Houston to finish her education and become a Licensed Professional Therapist. Some of Sierra's hobbies include interior design, listening to Fleetwood Mac, writing, spoiling her Yorkie (Knox) and shopping at places like Whole Earth Provision Co. Sierra is an avid traveler. Having already backpacked Italy, she has plans to return to Europe in the near future. You can find Sierra on Instagram @ _sierrahtx1999

Theodore Rockley is a Sports Management major at Houston Community College. In his free time, he enjoys playing games with his friends and family, and working on his sports podcast. He plans to transfer to the University of Houston in the fall to peruse his goal of making it into an NFL office. Outside of future goals, Theodore tries to keep up an active lifestyle, which he uses as time to meditate and come up with ideas to improve  his craft.

Xavier Saldivar is just some kid trying to scrounge up enough credits to get an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts and Humanities. Writing and other creative arts such as drawing and sculpture have interested him since he was a child. Comedy in particular is something he enjoys writing. When not writing, he enjoys things like video games, role playing games, and other miscellaneous degenerate pass times.

Bayleigh Sangi is a coffee-loving, adventure-having, easy-going nursing major who likes to write in her free time. Bayleigh attends HCC for her basics and plans to attend TWU or UT Austin to complete her degree and become a CRNA. Most of her hobbies include watching movies or TV shows, working out, hanging out with friends, and anything adventurous or outdoors. Outside of her hobbies, Bayleigh likes to dabble in baking, yoga, meditation, and making her way around Houston to find the best coffee shop (so far the winner is Boomtown in The Heights). These days you can find her outside tanning or on Instagram @bayleigh.paige.

Wafa Shaikh is a Creative Writing major at HCC. She spends her time writing stories and playing video games, but her aiming isn't great in both hobbies. Sometimes, she just likes to sit back and watch other people play to give them company. She loves giving people hugs and spending her time with friends with no plans. Find her at @wafifi_ on Twitter.

Courtney O'Banion Smith earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State University-San Marcos. Her work has appeared in several print and online publications including Relief, The Ocotillo Review, and Barren Magazine. She teaches writing at Houston Community College and is the faculty advisor for the HCC Katy Creative Writing Club. Find her on Twitter and Instagram @cobanionsmith or online at www.cobanionsmith.com.
